Understanding CBM & Chargeable Weight
Air Freight Formula
Volumetric Weight = L × W × H (cm) ÷ 6,000.
Airlines charge whichever is greater: actual weight or volumetric weight. This is the chargeable weight used on your air freight invoice.
Sea Freight Formula
CBM = L × W × H (meters).
For sea freight LCL, rates are charged per CBM or per 1,000 kg, whichever is greater (1 CBM = 1 metric ton ratio).
Container Capacity
20ft ≈ 28 CBM usable | 40ft ≈ 58 CBM | 40ft HC ≈ 68 CBM.
If your cargo exceeds LCL thresholds, FCL shipping from Dubai may be more cost-effective.
Frequently Asked Questions About CBM Calculation
CBM stands for Cubic Meter, which is the standard unit of measurement for calculating the volume of a shipment. It is calculated by multiplying the Length × Width × Height of the cargo in meters. CBM is essential for determining shipping costs, especially for sea freight (LCL) and air freight where volumetric weight may exceed actual weight.
